LOVE, FEAR AND SNUGGLES: THE MONKEY BRAIN DANCE By Avena Shakti Bliss It really all comes down to Love and Fear. The body basically has only two hormonal responses to life experiences. Fear stimulates the release of adrenaline, creating the so called "fight or flight" phenomenon created from monkey times when we needed this program to respond accordingly when the sabertooth tiger was about to eat us. The heart rate increases, the muscles tense up, acute awareness increases to sights and sounds, so we can be ready to jump and run. When fear is prolonged its considered "stress." The body releases cortisol, which gives us energy for the long term haul across the prairie when food is scarce and winter is coming. Cortisol literally stimulates our body to start eating away at our own flesh and bones for energy consumption. Most modern disease can be traced back to the effects of stress and the toxins we indulge into our bodies everyday. Back in our monkey root days these stresses were usually non-emotional. It had to do with a literal physical threat. You add a sea of emotional stimuli to the equation and this monkey mind is on a day to day marathon race from the Tyranasaurous Rex. Overdrawn credit cards, the rent is late, relationship difficulties, sitting in traffic, wondering why that hottie didn't text you back, brewing over how your boss yelled at you, not feeling good enough…the emotional stress we carry every day eats us alive. But there is another hormonal agent to save the day: oxytocin. This is the miraculous "love" hormone that counteracts cortisol. When we feel the "love" vibration, our brain dumps oxytocin into the bloodstream helping us feel calm, connected, and at peace. With oxytocin, we are the baby cuddled in the mothers arms, safe, nurtured and surrounded by positivity. There is no saber tooth tiger here. Nor is there in reality. So why would I be feeling such fear and panic? The "why" should not matter. Its more in the HOW to balance these monkey hormones in the brain. Unfortunately, due to the blood brain barrier limitations there is no "seratonin pill" on the market that works. You simply cannot pop happiness and make the cortisol go away. It must be produced naturally in the body. How? You already know the answer. By loving yourself and your body. Exercise. Yoga. Meditation. Eating well. Loving Touch. Notice I did not say SEX. Primal sex, as delicious as it is in the moment, often leads to more emotional/ hormonal primal brain reactions of rejection, disappointment and anxiety. The best way to dump loads of oxytocin into your bloodstream is through the miracle of human touch. Cuddles. Thats right. The biggest remedy on the market is cuddles. So the next time you are feeling stressed out and the pangs of fear and anxiety set in, follow your love doctors orders and snuggle somebody. xox http://www.shaktibliss.com Add Comment DJ Shakti Bliss is featured as the podcast of the week on Electro-Swing.com! Last week I released a new demo mix on Soundcloud called "Swing, Bump and Roll". After two years of playing dubstep my style has been shifting and lifting to new heights. My obsession with electro-swing has taken hold along with my endless exploration of mashing up banging loops with old classics. I love creating something new out of the mastery of other musicians and producers. The dance floors have unanimously approved. Within one week of releasing the mix to my Facebook community it started going viral and got nearly 1,000 plays in a matter of 7 days. Cool. But then I woke up one morning to an email from Paris, the heart of the electro-swing community, with some good news. They chose "Swing, Bump and Roll" as their podcast of the week! Perhaps my dream of touring Europe is not so far away? "Once again, an american artist is on www.electro-swing.com! Avena Shakti Bliss is a Dakini, DJ and Performance Artist twisting luscious gypsy lounge with bassy beats often described as sexy vaudevillian whomp. She plays with the Electro Swing tracks we know well adding her own samples. In fact she does it in a new way and that’s what we like here ! Time to dance :-)" You can hear the podcast on iTunes by following this link: http://electro-swing.com/2011/podcast/shakti-bliss-swing-bump-n-roll-es037/ |
